My Teaching Philosophy
There are many reasons why a person might decide to take trumpet lessons. Perhaps they are preparing for an audition or hoping to study music in college someday. They might want to improve a specific skill, or maybe they picked up the instrument for fun and aren’t sure how to get started. No matter your reason for taking lessons, my goal is to help you become a lifelong music-maker. Making music is a fundamental part of being human, and honing your skills as a trumpet player is an engaging and rewarding way to do just that.
Great trumpet playing requires vulnerability and bravery. In lessons, I create a safe environment for students to experiment with their sound. I ensure that students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and trying new things. I make it a priority to celebrate successes and teach that failure is a normal and important part of the learning process. As a teacher, my strengths include connecting well with students, maintaining structure and consistency within lessons, and adapting instruction to best suit the needs of each individual.
I help students develop a strong fundamental base within their lessons. At the same time, I encourage creativity through improvisation and composition activities. Other assignments may include solo or etude preparation, sight-reading, playing duets, and more. In addition to improved musicianship, some of the most important lessons students will learn are a strong work ethic, self efficacy, and a lifelong love of music making.
